Standards activities specific to health Informatics standards have a 30 year history in the United States.  The breadth and depth of these activities is initially daunting and further complicated by an international marketplace, organizational accreditation, and competition among standards developers.  There are, however, ongoing national and international efforts to rationalize the standards development environment and to harmonize the numbers of existing and impending standards.

Owing to the internationalization of business, both the Federal Government and the American National Standards Institute are committed to adopting International standards wherever possible.  International and domestic information technology standards activities grew out of the electrical and electronic standards arena.  Hence, two organizations, the International Standards Organization and the International Electrotechnical Commission are prominent in the international arena.

Internationally, health informatics standards activities are concentrated in the International Standards Organization Technical Committee 215.  The American Society for Testing and Materials coordinates and represents the United States standards developers in this technical committee.  A second technical committee deals with clinical laboratory standards, including automation – the National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards coordinates the U.S. presence on this ISO committee.  Several other standards, such as AAMI, DICOM, and HL7, have an international presence independent of the International Standards Organization.
